[PORT ANGELES, WA] — The Conservation Angler (TCA) is proud to announce that Todd Moen, a respected filmmaker, photographer, and storyteller, has joined the organization’s Board of Directors. Moen is the founder/co-founder of Catch Magazine, an online journal dedicated to fly-fishing film, photography, and storytelling, and has spent decades documenting wild fish, wild rivers, and angling culture in remote fisheries.

Moen’s appointment comes as TCA expands its focus on angler science, wild steelhead, and long-term monitoring across the Pacific Rim. Through The Northern Crown — TCA’s emerging network of sentinel rivers spanning from California to Kamchatka — the organization is turning anglers, guides, and fishing lodges into partners in collecting biological data for wild steelhead conservation.

“Todd has done as much as anyone in the fly-fishing world to help people see wild fish and wild rivers with a deeper sense of wonder and responsibility,” said John McMillan, President of The Conservation Angler. “At the exact moment TCA is expanding our angler-science work across the Pacific Rim, having Todd join our board feels like a perfect match. He understands steelhead, anglers, and how powerful storytelling can move people from appreciation to action.”

Moen’s films are known for technical excellence, patience, music, and respect for fish, water, and wild places. His work has helped shape how anglers experience fly fishing through film, while highlighting the fragility of the rivers and fisheries that sustain the sport.

“TCA is incredibly fortunate to have Todd join the board,” said Peter Herzog, Board Chair of The Conservation Angler. “Todd brings credibility, creativity, and a deep connection to the fish and waters we are working to protect. As TCA sharpens its focus on wild steelhead and angler science, his voice will help us reach more people and tell this story in a way that is honest, compelling, and urgently needed.”

A Perfect Match for Angler Science

TCA is working to scale a model that began decades ago in Kamchatka, where anglers helped collect biological samples and data from remote wild steelhead rivers that otherwise would have been difficult to monitor. That work demonstrated the power of pairing rigorous science with the people who spend the most time on the water.

Today, TCA is expanding that approach across the North Pacific. By collecting fish size, scale samples, age structure, life-history patterns, and genetic material, anglers can help fill monitoring gaps in rivers that are too remote, vast, or underfunded for agency monitoring.

“Todd’s work has always carried a sense of reverence for wild places,” McMillan added. “That matters. We need science, but we also need people to care enough to act. Todd helps bridge those worlds. He can help us show anglers that every fish they encounter can become more than a memory; it can become a data point that helps protect wild steelhead.”

As TCA builds The Northern Crown, Moen’s background in visual storytelling will help explain why wild steelhead matter, why many populations remain poorly understood, and why anglers have an important role in conserving them.
