Sergie Lamzov

This scholarship honors the work of Sergey Lamzov.

Not long after the Kamchatka Steelhead Project was launched, Sergey Lamzov was assigned by the government to monitor the operation. Sergey worked diligently in his role as KSP fish inspector, thwarting a number of poaching attempts and befriending KSP staff and guests alike.

In 2001, Sergey was shot and killed by poachers while on patrol on the Khairyuzova River, a remote salmon and trout river in western Kamchatka that enters the Sea of Okhotsk at the latitude of 57 degrees North on this remarkable peninsula of volcanoes and wild fish.

The Lamzov Scholarship was established to honor his work and memory and to help prepare a new generation of conservationists.

Each year, The Conservation Angler awards merit scholarships and prizes to university students pursuing degree programs in ichthyology, fisheries science, wildlife management, eco-systems function, or similar areas of study. Lamzov prizes are bestowed to outstanding high school students with notable academic achievement, community service, and commitment to extra-curricular activities.
